One of my favorite ways to design is to start with a sketch challenge. I recently came across the My Favorite Things Sketches and thought I’d give one a whirl, especially since I needed to create a baby card. A sketch is always a great place to start as it gives your design structure. By nailing down the parameters of the project, it is actually freeing in a way. You are able to focus on the rest of the design.
Here’s my baby card design that was inspired by the sketch. I’m excited with how it turned out. It’s a more clean and graphic style than I usually do but the sketch seemed to call for it. I might just have to play with this style more!
Here’s the sketch that I was inspired by. As you can see I’ve used most of the elements of the design. The banner inspired me to use the Dienamics Banner Greetings Die as a base for the sentiment.
The dots at the top of the sketch allowed me to add in some of my ever so favorite vintage buttons. I think I’m going to have to do an Etsy search for some more soon as I use them so often. I love the idea of repurposing vintage buttons into a new design and I love the different shades and sizes of the buttons. By running a piece of jute twine through the buttons, it creates movement in the design.
The gorgeous Antique Around the World Plane charm is from Maya Road. I love how it ties in with the swirling twine and makes the card more boyish. To create the sentiment I used one of my favorite MFT die sets, the Dienamics LLC Little Letters. Being able to die cut any sentiment you want with however many letters you wish for is a huge plus in my opinion!
There’s still time to play along with this sketch challenge! Check it out here!
